The Heartbreaking Shift Only 12 Months Has Caused in the US
Twelve months back, the landscape was completely different. Ahead of the American presidential vote, considerate residents could acknowledge the nation's deep flaws – its inequities and disparity – however they still could perceive it as the US. A democratic nation. A country where the rule of law meant something. A state guided by a honorable and upright official, notwithstanding his older age and increasing frailty.
These days, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the nation we live in. People suspected of being undocumented migrants are detained and pushed into vehicles, occasionally denied due process. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition to build a lavish ballroom. The president is targeting his opponents or alleged foes and insisting legal authorities transfer an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are dispatched into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, relabeled the Department of War, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Colleges, attorney offices, news companies are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like nobility.
“America, just months before its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge toward dictatorship and totalitarianism,” an American historian, commented in August. “In the end, swifter than I thought feasible, it did happen in America.”
Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we are, and the speed at which it has happened.
Yet, we know that the leader was properly voted in. Despite his highly troubling previous administration and even after the warnings associated with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – following the president personally said publicly he planned to be a dictator just on day one – a majority of citizens selected him rather than the other candidate.
As terrifying as today's circumstances may be, it's more frightening to recognize that we are just three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. Where will three more years of this decline find us? And suppose that period transforms into an prolonged era, since there is not anyone to stop this president from deciding that another term is essential, possibly for defense purposes?
Admittedly, all is not lost. There will be legislative votes in 2026 that may bring a different governmental control, should Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. We have government representatives who are trying to apply some accountability, for example lawmakers currently starting a probe concerning the try to fund seizure from the justice department.
And a national vote three years from now could begin us down the road toward restoration exactly as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.
There exist countless citizens protesting in the streets across municipalities, like they performed recently in the No Kings rallies.
Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is awakening”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or during the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.
On those occasions, the unstable nation eventually was righted.
The author states he understands the signs of that revival and observes it occurring at present. For proof, he cites the recent massive protests, the widespread, cross-party resistance regarding a broadcaster's firing and the almost universal rejection by reporters to sign government requirements they only publish what is sanctioned.
“The dormant force always remains dormant before some venality turns extremely harmful, an specific act so disrespectful toward public welfare, certain violence so disruptive, that it is forced other than to stir.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Maybe he’ll be validated.
Meanwhile, the major inquiries endure: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its standing in the world and its commitment to constitutional order?
Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?
My pessimistic brain suggests that the second option is correct; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, though, tells me that we need to strive, by any means we can.
For me, as an observer of the press, that involves urging journalists to adhere, more fully, to their purpose of holding power to account. For some people, it might involve engaging with election efforts, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.
Less than a year ago, we existed in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. Our sole course is to strive to continue fighting.
