Meteorologists have indicated an icy start to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, following last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are expected to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Medical Advisories Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
