El Kaabi's Stunning Strike Wraps Up The Atlas Lions' Win Against Comoros in Afcon First Game.
Host nation Morocco shook off a jittery beginning to defeat Comoros in the competition's first match on the weekend, thanks to Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a less than dominant performance, though, from the heavily tipped hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and had to work tirelessly for the three points in wet conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Tense Start and Missed Chances
Morocco failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at the interval despite controlling the ball, finally breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute of the second half.
It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass into the net.
“The first match is never easy but we came good in the second period,” said Morocco coach Regragui.
The Substitute's Piece of Magic
The tension was subsequently calmed by a piece of sheer genius from substitute El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes following coming on, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken the lead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a foul on Díaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was saved by keeper Yannick Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Chance
Comoros stoutly defended against their more illustrious opponents for long periods until the hosts' greater quality eventually made the difference.
Shot-stopper Pandor made a number of further good stops to limit the score as the match progressed, although his team did have a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting straight at keeper Bounou.
Injury Concern for Morocco
The victory was somewhat overshadowed by an apparent injury to the captain, Saïss, who was forced off after the 18th minute in some distress.
This defender had only made his comeback to the national side recently following a lengthy absence caused by ankle surgery.
The win continues the team's record-breaking run of successive wins to 19, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
